In recent months, Kenya has been gripped by a worrying wave of abductions targeting outspoken young individuals, particularly those from Generation Z. This unsettling development has not only sparked national outrage but also raised serious questions about the state of freedom of expression in the country.

Abductions: A Disturbing Pattern

Since June 2024, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has documented 82 cases of abductions or enforced disappearances. Shockingly, seven cases were reported in December alone, with six individuals still missing. Many of these victims are active on social media, using digital platforms to voice their opinions and critique government policies.

Targeting Online Critics

A particularly chilling case involves the abduction of four social media users who shared AI-generated images of President William Ruto. These images, which some viewed as satirical, appear to have triggered harsh reprisals, illustrating the fragile balance between digital expression and state control.

Public Outcry and Denials

The public’s response has been swift and strong. Protests have erupted across Nairobi, with demonstrators demanding the release of those abducted and an end to these practices. Even prominent figures like Senator Okiya Omtatah have been arrested while advocating for justice.

President Ruto has promised to put an end to the abductions, emphasizing that young people should live without fear. However, the National Police Service has denied any involvement, claiming to be investigating the cases. This denial has been met with widespread skepticism, with many suspecting state complicity in these actions.

Freedom of Speech Under Threat

The abductions pose a grave threat to Kenya’s freedom of speech. By targeting young people for their online activities, a chilling message is being sent to others: dissent and critique will not be tolerated. This atmosphere of fear risks silencing voices that are essential for a thriving democracy.

Calls for Accountability

Human rights organizations are urging the government to take decisive action. The KNCHR has called for thorough investigations into the abductions, accountability for perpetrators, and better protection for all citizens. Furthermore, activists are advocating for Kenya to ratify the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances, signaling a stronger commitment to human rights.
